What does all inclusive usually include?

Most all inclusive holidays include:

  • breakfast, lunch and dinner, usually buffet style
  • snacks between meals
  • local alcoholic drinks, soft drinks, tea and coffee
  • use of the pools, sun loungers and often kids' clubs and entertainment

What's often not included: premium or imported spirits, some à la carte restaurants, room service, spa treatments and motorised water sports. "Ultra all inclusive" packages usually add some of these, so compare carefully.

Where are the best all inclusive holidays?

Turkey. Probably the strongest all inclusive destination within easy reach of the UK, especially around Antalya, Belek and Side. See our Turkey holidays page for each area.

Egypt. Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh have big all inclusive resorts and winter sunshine, plus Red Sea snorkelling.

Spain and the Canary Islands. Majorca, Tenerife, Lanzarote and the Costas all have plenty of all inclusive choice, with the Canaries working well in winter.

Greece and Cyprus. Crete, Rhodes, Kos and the Cypriot resorts of Ayia Napa and Protaras offer good family all inclusive options.

Long-haul. Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica are known for large all inclusive beach resorts.

Is all inclusive worth it?

All inclusive tends to be good value for families with kids who snack all day, and for anyone who wants to spend most of the week by the pool. It's less worth it if you love eating out, plan lots of day trips or are staying somewhere with a great local food scene. A quick way to check: compare the all inclusive price against half board for the same hotel and dates, then think honestly about how much you'd spend on lunch and drinks.

What to check before you book

  1. Drinks hours. Some hotels stop serving included drinks late at night.
  2. À la carte restaurants. Find out whether they cost extra and how many visits are included.
  3. Wristbands and rules. Check the policy for kids' meals and drinks in the room.
  4. Location. A hotel in the middle of nowhere suits all inclusive. A hotel in a lively town might be wasted on it.
